TaichungThe Place TaichungDelivering letters and purposeful tasks in the morning light

The mail trucks are already lined up in perfect formation. While the city still slumbers, the day’s first deliveries are quietly underway. This morning journey begins at the Chunghwa Post Taichung Yingcai Post Office—an operations center rarely open to the public. Travelers will be granted behind-the-scenes access to this core facility, stepping into the parcel, delivery, and mail management units to witness the entire process in motion.

From manual sorting and barcode scanning to route planning and bag loading, every task unfolds in seamless succession. Watch as postal workers sort mail by district and postal code, assemble delivery bags, and ready the trucks for departure. It’s a choreography of efficiency, honed by repetition. A senior postal carrier will also walk you through the essential tools and steps of delivery prep—how mailbags are packed, routes mapped, and deliveries carried out. Behind each envelope lies a quiet order that awakens with the city, morning after morning.

Stepping out of the postal hub, the route leads to Shen Ji New Village—once military dormitories, now a hub for young creatives. Here, low-rise buildings house small brands and fresh ideas. At ComeTrue Coffee, fair trade values are poured into every mellow cup—modest, yet deeply grounded. Meanwhile, Xiangshang Market continues its daily rhythm: bustling with early grocery buyers, afternoon snack seekers, and evening vendors closing up. Street-side aromas shift with the sun.

By witnessing the intricate logic and human care behind the postal flow, one comes to understand—every letter that arrives on time is not just punctual, but part of the city’s hidden morning rhythm.

  • Chunghwa Post Taichung Post Office

Kicking off the city’s morning mission at the starting line of postal delivery

The Chunghwa Post Taichung Yingcai Post Office is a nine-story building that plays a central role in handling and distributing mail across the Taichung area. In response to the rapid growth of the Taichung metropolitan region, the delivery units formerly located across from the old city hall on Minquan Road were consolidated and relocated to this site. The facility officially began operations on November 20, 1991.
Spanning a large footprint, the building houses parcel, delivery, and postal management departments, reflecting both speed and precision in its day-to-day operations. Its architectural design prioritizes functionality, with clearly segmented zones according to mail types, revealing a unique aesthetic rooted in the orderliness of urban logistics. Rarely open to the public, this important postal site provides visitors with a rare opportunity to observe the inner workings of Taiwan’s postal system and gain a deeper appreciation for the cultural continuity and service values embedded in Taichung’s civic life.

  • Shen Ji New Village

Launching entrepreneurial dreams in old dormitories

In the early hours at Shen Ji New Village, sunlight falls gently on the low-rise buildings, wooden windows are half-open, and shops begin to lift their shutters one by one. Originally built in 1969 as dormitories for staff of the Taiwan Provincial Government’s Audit and Information Departments, the village features light yellow façades and modest two-story structures arranged throughout narrow alleyways, preserving the post-war dormitory landscape.
Following the streamlining of the provincial government in 1998, the area was left idle until 2015, when it was revitalized as a cultural and creative park. Since then, handmade craft stores, cafés, and design brands have breathed new life into these aging homes. Today, the morning scene is a quiet blend of coffee beans being ground, sunlight streaming through alleys, and the determined footsteps of young entrepreneurs preparing for the day ahead.

  • ComeTrue Coffee Taichung Shen Ji Store (Flagship Location)

    The world’s only B Corp-certified coffee shop

ComeTrue Coffee began in a 60-year-old house that once served as the residence of an audit chief. With red brick tiles and whitewashed walls, the building stands quietly amid greenery, its windows framed by thriving coffee trees. As sunlight slants through the space, it seems to capture the gentle rhythm of time itself.
Every cup of coffee served here also helps deliver clean water to communities in Africa. Founder Wang Kuo-Hsiung has pledged half of the company’s profits to the Clean Water for Africa Project, which has funded the drilling of 14 wells over five years—restoring access to water for more than 3,000 households.
With its commitment to sustainability—from circular packaging to repurposing coffee grounds into shoes—ComeTrue Coffee became the first Taiwanese coffee brand to achieve international B Corp certification. In this thoughtfully preserved old house, each cup offers not only warmth, but also a shared hope for global impact.

  • Xiangshang Market

Three faces in one day, a marketplace of flavors and human connection

Situated in Taichung’s West District, Xiangshang Market is a beloved spot for both locals and seasoned travelers. In the early morning, neighborhood shoppers weave through the stalls with baskets in hand, picking up everything from fresh produce and dry goods to groceries and clothing. By afternoon, the scene shifts as food vendors take over, offering oyster omelets, braised pork rice, and iced black tea that become part of the street’s familiar rhythm. Come evening, the market takes on yet another identity. It bustles with the energy of a night market and transforms with a new wave of enticing aromas.
These alleyways and stalls reflect the evolving daily life of Taichung’s West District. They also carry architectural traces of the era when U.S. military forces were stationed nearby. More than just a marketplace, Xiangshang is a living archive of memory, community, and the enduring flavor of local life.
